NewsChina tries to balance economy and climate

The BBC is reporting on China’s new plans to combat climate change. The country aims to reduce energy use 20% by 2010.
But Beijing puts the responsibility for climate change firmly on the developed countries and says it won’t sacrifice economic development for its climate goals. China’s rapid industrial development means it could surpass the United States and become the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter.
China plans to increase it use of renewable sources and nuclear energy, as well as improving efficiency of coal-fired power plants. The BBC article also sounds a cautious note though, pointing out that China has hardly ever met its environmental targets.
