NewsClimate change threatens historic polar explorers’ hut

The International Herald Tribune writes about worries over climate change coming from an unusual party. The World Monuments Fund has place the base used by Captain Scott during his ill fated mission to the south pole on its list of endangered sites.

The hut, built of wood, has been preserved by the cold for decades. Essentially the wood has been frozen. But now the ice is melting and the timbers have become water logged. Like any untreated waterlogged wood the timbers of the hut are now rotting.

Conserving the site and the many artifacts there as the surroundings warm will cost millions.
