NewsFruits Could Produce Powerful Fuel

Fructose, a sugar found mainly in fruit, could produce a biofuel far richer in energy than ethanol, according to an article in the Journal nature. The fuel is generated by a new two-step catalytic process, developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The new fuel, 2,5-dimethylfuran or DMF has 40% more energy density than ethanol. It’s also a more stable compound, that doesn’t evaporate as quickly as ethanol. Although more work is needed DMF does appear to have great potential.
An excerpt of the article in Nature is available here and a BBC story mentioning this, and other biofuel options, can be found here
