NewsPoland Halts Controversial Road Plan After European Pressure

Polish plans to build a road through one of the few wetlands remaining in Europe have been called to halt. The work had been suspended earlier for the bird nesting season.
It looked like Poland was going to resume work earlier this week. But the European Commission sought an injunction, and threatened to withhold hundreds of millions of euros of funding, until Poland can proof the road will comply with EU environmental rules.
The delay has run into opposition from local residents who want the road, a bypass around a town, to be built as quickly as possible.
