NewsClimate Change Threatens Food Supplies
Posted by Jarsto on Tuesday, 7 Aug 2007
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that climate change could endanger food supplies. While crop yields might actually increase in the higher latitudes, they will probably decrease in lower latitudes.
As most developing nations are in the lower latitudes this could severely increase the risk of hunger in nations where food supplies are already fragile. Scientists predict that India could lose nearly a fifth of its total cereal production.
Climate change is also having an impact on people who depend on forests for the food. Forest fires, pests and diseases are all on the increase. The ecosystems of both forests and agriculture will have to adapt to the changing climate.
