I've been wondering about this myself...I've seen so many gimicks on the internet trying to sell me kits, or a book on how to make my own energy. I see Real Estate in Casper, WY it would be good to know the answers to their energy questions. Thanks!

We agree that plastic bottle pollution is a growing problem. More than 150 billion water bottles are produced each year and that’s not counting soft drinks, sports drink, tea, etc. The problem is that only 20 – 30 percent is being recycled and the rest are ending up in our oceans, streams, lakes and landfills. We knew something needed to be done.....and quick. We felt that a realistic approach toward solving this problem would be to develop a plastic bottle that would biodegrade, leaving behind harmless biogases and humus.
We looked at PLA (Corn based plastics) as a solution but decided against that because we feel that food grains should be used for food. Using food grain or land that should be used for food to make our fuels and plastics wasn’t a good idea. Additionally, PLA results in the use of more pesticides, genetically altered corn, depleted soils, and higher food prices.
We looked at the oxo-degradable plastics, the kind that break down into smaller and smaller pieces until they are invisible to the eye...they don’t go away, they just get smaller. We didn’t think that was a good idea either.
We decided that PET plastic, the kind we currently use for water and soft drinks would be a better choice if it could be made less harmful for our environment.
It’s been a lot of work but we just announced our logo program for the world’s first truly biodegradable plastic bottle. We just introduced our logo program so that consumers will be able to identify our bottles and chose a product that will be better for us and future generations.

ENSO Bottles will biodegrade, into biogases and humus. It’s not the final answer, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Look for the ENSO logo and make a choice for “Bottles for a Healthier Earth.”

You can use biodegradable weights and sinkers as well as lures too! http://www.greentackle.com sells Bioline and other biodegradable fishing gear.

I personally use Bioline for trout fishing up here in the Pacific Northwest and it works great.

Hello,

I would also like to remind everyone that we should all be using organic lotions and creams in our skin care. Lotions that we apply to our body and face go directly into our blood stream (think nicotin patch), and the harmful chemicals they have inside of them do not do your skin cells, nor your overall health any good.

I would recommend that those wishing to find healthy lotion type into google "healthy lotion" and look for the top companies out there that offer chemical free lotions and face creams. And these will not be the same ones you find in your local drug store. Its called being smart - and being healthy. . .good luck!

I started by typing into google "healthy lotion" and found my skin care company that I love called Made from Earth. . .

Don't forget that in addition to the physical trees, which are mostly farmed, paper involves a toxic bleaching process (to air and water) and that many farmed tree practices contribute to land runoff and water quality issues. Then there is the energy use of the presses, trucking paper in and books out, then shipping them out to stores ... then often back to warehouses and distributors, then off to clearance stores, etc. Some books take several trips (and about 25% of all books printed end up being shredded and disposed of). It does take power to use the Kindle and it is made of plastics and electronics -- but so is the computer (or phone) you are using to access this blog (unless you read it on the Kindle as well). Switch one newspaper subscription to the Kindle and you not only save a ton of money, you may literally save that much paper each year. And since the Kindle edition is ad-free, you also lose that extra temptation to overspend from the ads this time of year (I think they outweigh the paper, most days, and are of the more toxic slick-paper, high color variety than the rest of the news).

If you hang on to your books (as I do), it can also save a lot of space and moving costs; personal libraries not only take up a lot of room, they are quite heavy and bulky when moving times rolls around.

All the rumors of a new version are just that: rumors. And they are officially denied by Amazon, where the original is, as you say, selling like hotcakes and back ordered for months.

There is an alternative to a new unit (which are sold out fo the next three months) that may get you a Kindle for Christmas (without resorting to sky-high ebay prices) -- the refurbished Kindles keep coming back in stock at Amazon. There were several available on the web site yesterday, appearing at times from very early morning until midnight. From the comments and emails I've received from those who grabbed one, there must have been at least dozen in stock in the morning and several more in stock in the afternoon and evening, so it pays to keep checking the link:

http://www.tinyurl.com/RefurbKindle

Note that if the refurbished units are sold out, that page will also display "used" Kindles being sold by third parties, not Amazon. Generally these are new or only slightly used units, sold at a premium due to the shortage. I know that many dozens of the refurbished Kindles have been sold and shipped since Dec 1, but they go in an out of stock quickly. They don't last on the site very long, so if you want one, you must order it immediately if you find one in stock. If you they are out of stock when you check, be sure to read my blog for tips on getting one:

Fascinating that you bring up this concept about which is a more environmentally sound method of obtaining books. In fact, I'll introduce a third.

The Amazon Kindle and other e-readers will dramatically help cut down on paper production, but unfortunately ebooks aren’t yet widespread. It’s opened the door for environmentally-conscious book companies to drastically change the way readers get their paper-based books. This is where environmentally friendly netflix-like book rental companies, such as Bookswim, enter — http://www.bookswim.com. No due dates, no late fees, and free shipping both ways.

The very nature of book rental allows multiple people to enjoy the same copy of a book, which can reduce the number of copies manufactured – hence, less paper. And without the need to drive to the library or bookstore, USPS-delivered book rental packages won’t increase carbon output because the mailperson is coming to your door anyway.

Im not sure about the energy requirements for making a device like the Kindle, however I assume it is less damaging to the environment than an iPhone or a modern MP3 since it doesnt use a backlit displays.

So over the lifespan of the product it will require less energy to keep it powered.

And I imagine that countless acres of forests can be saved if everyone used a Kindle.

Overall, I would guess that the environmental impact would be slightly less if one owned a Kindle rather than owning paper books, it all depends on how much you read.

I for one enjoy the benefits of owning a Kindle, since it saves me lots of space and I can have my entire library on a single device which saves me lugging around my heavy book.

I’m an environmentally-conscious mom and I head the Community Activities Committee for my daughter’s school. To all parents and school administrators: if you’re looking for a fresh, new fundraising idea, think Green Fundraising! We recently held a Green Fundraising Event at the Wildwood Elementary School in Wilmington, MA and it was a huge success!! We raised over $8K for the school. I found that people were so much more willing to participate because we were selling only green products. There are a few online companies that can help you with your event and where you can buy the eco-products. We used Mother Earth Fundraising to purchase all of our green fundraising products and I’d highly recommend them. Great customer service and their eco-products are all 100% environmentally friendly materials.

If anyone else has held green fundraisers, I’d love to her your story too.

Anyway, hope this helps and stay GREEN!

Hey Dave -

Thanks for the mention and linkage! Agritopia is a really neat place. Very different compared to what you usually find in and around Gilbert / Phoenix. It's also technically a sellers market there, which is not easy to find in the Phoenix metro area.

The Idaho National Laboratory has a lot of other environmentally friendly projects. The Web site is www.inl.gov but there is also a channel at YouTube.

http://www.youtube.com/user/IdahoNationalLab

I would suggest the "Motion to Energy M2E" or "Harvesting the Sun's Energy" videos if you are interested in green power sources.

With the problems of water shortage, why can't we build watersheds or dams in the Sierra Navada Mtns. it would hold water back when the snow melts and let it sit until it is needed or seep into the earth, where it can feed our underground rivers. If we start here maybe we can start getting people to work, keep steel here not send it overseas, reopen our steelmills to process the products needed to make Watersheds or Dams,to retain the water we need to keep growing. The Cement factories working, Trucking and it trickles down to the whole state.

Thanks for such an informative and useful post about herbal remedies. herbal medicines don't have any side effect. they are just good for health.
Thanks for your time to post this article.

Greg, I just bought a totally organic product to use as an insecticide. You might consider carrying this if it would be profitable for you: Diatomaceous Earth

It would have been nice to buy it from you. Maybe next season.

I really really enjoyed this program on your store and fully support what you are doing for pets in the green world. The rest of the world has to get used to using high quality ingredients and three cheers for Alison Chandler --- good quality pet foods doesn't have to cost much more. The one advantage you will have is to break the cycle of high veterinarian bills that you will be paying if you don't use good quality in all your foods for your pets, and further ..for yourself.
